Missing Mary Augusta 18511920 Ward 9781177230445 Books
A heartbreaking story of a couple deeply in love who have only a few weeks together before he goes off to join his regiment. This brief time of married bliss they spend together is sweet yet sad as to whether they will see each other again is uppermost in their thoughts. She remains faithful to the end although she yearns for her husband, another honorable man begins to fill the emptiness in her life. The reader gets a glimpse of civilian war effort and the necessity for hospitals and convalence facilities and volunteers efforts to nurse, and encourage the wounded and their families. Only drawback is that the reader is left pretty much with the option to choose the most desirable ending.Product details

Missing Mary Augusta 18511920 Ward 9781177230445 Books Reviews
George and Nelly are recently married when WW I breaks out. George enlists and is then reported missing - assumed dead. Sir William Farrell, who is also in love with her, sees his opportunity, and with the help of his sister Cicely, makes his move. Nelly holds him off in time to learn that George has been found, though horribly wounded. She goes to him, but he dies, and Nelly decides to devote herself to hospital work - to "endure and serve."
Mrs. Ward's supercharged patriotism, which is over-idealized, is a bit hard to take today, and the fact that it's expressed mainly through George reduces our sympathies for him. Farrell is not portrayed as the villain of the book (he is merely going with his feelings in light of the circumstances); rather that role is assigned to Nelly's sister Bridget, who doesn't want Nelly to marry George, hoping she'll pick someone with lots of money, which she is hoping to share in. Later she refuses to identify George's body, hoping keeping the secret from Nelly will bring her and Farrell together sooner. It all comes to light and she is disgraced. One unfortunate scene that strains credulity is the one where Nelly communicates with George in a visionary way after his death. This was one of Mrs. Ward's last novels, and although it has some good things in it, it's not as good as some of her earlier books.
Good reading, if you are in to Romantic Novels. Although more interested of French Revolution, Civil War etc, the writers structure kept me interested all the way to the final page
